2018 Austin Changemaker Series
The AIGA Austin Changemaker Series unites teams of creative professionals with nonprofits and social Change Organizations to use design thinking, sustainable frameworks and creative tools to help advance their mission.
We’re looking for creative professionals and social Change Organizations and nonprofits to apply to participate in the series. Subscribe to email updates to learn more about the series and how you can join one of our project teams and use your creative skills to help our community.
Once applicants are selected, we’ll pair small groups of creative professionals with their respective Change Organization. These multi-functional teams will work together throughout the summer to tackle some of the organizations’ trickiest challenges using design thinking.
2018 Changemaker Series Cause: Homelessness
The homeless issue in Austin has become commonplace despite how dire the situation can be for many of our citizens. Austin’s homeless population has remained fairly steady, last counted at 2036 by Austin ECHO, over the last few years. Around 40% of those individuals live unsheltered at night. In our community, the unsheltered population is largely made up of single males, African Americans, and people aged 45 – 65. One person or organization alone cannot solve the housing and homelessness issue in Central Texas, but we all can help.
This year’s inaugural Changemaker Series will focus on this important issue. The series runs from June to September and will unite teams of creative professionals with nonprofits and social change organizations to use design thinking, sustainable frameworks and creative tools to help advance their missions. Join us and utilize your skills for your community. This is a great opportunity to collaborate and with a diverse set of people, learn new skills, and above all give back.

Changemaker Series Process
WORKSHOP WEEKEND / June 9-10
Accepted applicants shall be assembled into teams that will participate in a mandatory, two-day intensive human-centered design bootcamp. Together you will:
- Meet your team members and Change Organization partners
- Learn design thinking theory and methods taught by local design leaders and educators
- Work with your Change Organization to understand their needs and the challenge at hand and begin research
- Formulate a creative brief and other plans to tackle your challenge
Progress made during the Workshop Weekend will be a foundation for the work done over the summer. Check out this blog post to read about one of these inspiring weekends.
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT / June – September
Project teams will work closely together over the course of four months to conduct research, develop, and implement sustainable solutions to address your challenge. Changemaker organizers will provide support when needed, including setting up team check-in events. These check-ins serve as opportunities for teams to swap best practices, pool resources, ask for help, and stay on track with their Change Organization partners.
SHOWCASE / September
The Showcase is a celebration of the work accomplished by the Changemaker project teams with a party and exhibition. We welcome everybody to come party with us, learn more about our participating Change Organizations and the team projects, and get inspired by how design thinking can help address local social causes. Eat, drink, and be inspired with the larger community!
