2019 Austin Changemaker Series

The AIGA Austin Changemaker Series unites teams of creative professionals with nonprofits and social Change Organizations to use design thinking, sustainable frameworks and creative tools to help advance their mission.

These multi-discipline teams will work together throughout the summer to tackle some of the organizations’ trickiest challenges using human-centered design and design-thinking tools.

Changemaker Series Process

Read all about last year’s Series on our blog and follow the work our teams do this year.

1. Ideate

WEEKEND WORKSHOP / June

Accepted applicants shall be assembled into teams that will participate in a mandatory, two-day intensive human-centered design boot camp. Together you will:

  • Meet your team members and change organization partners
  • Learn design thinking theory and methods taught by local design leaders and educators
  • Work with your change organization to understand their needs and the challenge at hand and begin research
  • Formulate a creative brief and other plans to tackle your challenge

Progress made during the Weekend Workshop will be a foundation for the work done over the summer.

2. Create

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT / June – September

Project teams will work closely together over the course of nearly four months to conduct research, develop, and implement sustainable solutions to address your challenge. Monthly check-ins serve as opportunities for teams to swap best practices, pool resources, ask for help, and stay on track with their change organization partners.

3. Celebrate

SHOWCASE / Late September

The Showcase is a celebration of the work accomplished by the Changemaker project teams with a party and exhibition. We welcome everybody to come party with us, learn more about our participating Change Organizations and the team projects, and get inspired by how design thinking can help address local social causes. Eat, drink, and be inspired with the larger community!
