UTR: Tamara Becerra Valdez

Under the Radar is a lecture series featuring our local design badasses who are helping put Austin on the map. Come out to discover and celebrate killer design that is taking place in our own backyard. Admission includes one taco ticket and free beer comes with your purchase of a Under the Radar pint glass.

Tamara Becerra Valdez was born in 1984 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She received her BFA in visual art and cultural anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Valdez has worked alongside exceptional staff at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Harry Ransom
Center and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum and Texas Folklife. In 2012, she began working under the name, Folklorica, as a way to retell ideas of place, history and the intersection of art and anthropology.

Best known for her delicate arrangements and experimentation of fragmented materials such as paper, glass, flowers, clay, dust and dirt, her work recalls the beauty in the mundane and overlooked traces and sites. Currently, she lives in Austin Texas where she is an educator in Latino visual culture/art at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.
