Austin Design Jam: Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation

Design Jam is a free mini-design hackathon that brings designers together to work for a good cause. This month, we will gather in (virtual) community in service to the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation, an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers. Restaurant workers need tools to create financial and career security in a volatile economy. We believe that by creating and providing low-cost options to upskill, reskill, and make saving money possible, we can leverage the natural talents and work ethic of this group to become more stable and secure. We will know this to be true when restaurant workers are able to earn more and to begin saving.

UX professionals, designers, researchers, developers, prototypers, data heads, civic hackers, leaders – as always, everyone is welcome at the Jam! Register here:

Our mission for this Design Jam is to gather resources, ideate programs, and develop tactics the help service industry professionals move toward career and financial stability, while spreading the goodness of the user-centered design & problem-solving process! We’ll present a design prompt at the beginning of the event. Breakout groups of attendees will spend about two hours working through the phases of research, design, prototyping, and testing, on a solution they create. At the end of the Jam, groups can volunteer to share and discuss their work with the featured nonprofit and other attendees. (If you don’t care to show what you worked on, no worries – there’s never pressure to share publicly at the Jam.)

At the end of the evening, we’ll have created a variety of solutions that the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation can use and further develop to support their members, many of whom have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.
